1. Who is the narrator?

The narrator introduces himself as Ruben Blum, a historian. He is a Jewish historian, which means he is Jewish and studies history; however, he does not study Jewish history. His field is taxation studies, which involves research into the history of tax policy's influence on politics and political revolutions.

2. How did Ruben get involved in taxation studies?

When Ruben became a historian, his initial focus was the economics of the pre-American, British Colonial period. He has never much enjoyed the field, but it is a field that he discovered was wide open for research. Studying American history was crowded, and he was always good with numbers.

3. How did Ruben serve in World War II?

Ruben was drafted into the U.S. Army the day after the attack on Pearl Harbor. He was assigned as a finance clerk since he had half-completed a bookkeeping course. Because of his scoliosis and excellent skills as a typist, he spent the war in the U.S. He processed paychecks and disbursed travel expenses between Fort Benning and Fort Sill.
