Objective
The Name of the Rose contains many characters, all with antiquated names that can be hard to keep straight. The objective of this lesson is to use the novel to illustrate principles of characterization for your class.
Lesson
Class Discussion: Who are the main characters in The Name of the Rose? How many are there? How are they described? Why are they important? Are their descriptions significantly different from their actions? If so, how?
Activity: Divide the students into groups of three and give them each one character to research. Have them identify all of the ways in which that character is characterized in one given chapter of the book.
