Lesson 1 (from Prelude - Chapter 3)
Objective
This lesson introduces students to Charles Martin’s romance-disaster novel The Mountain Between Us. Students will research the author and genre of the work, read the Prelude and Chapter 1, and discuss narrative styles and settings established in these chapters. The novel is related from the first-person perspective of Dr. Ben Payne, whose circumstances lead him to a violent plane crash in the far removed High Uintas Wilderness in northern Utah.

Group Assignment: Assign students to groups of 3-4 each to read the Preface and Chapter 1 of the novel. Following your reading, analyze the settings that have been established in these chapters and develop a visual project that depicts your interpretation of the novel’s setting. Where does the Preface begin? How does this setting differ from that of Chapter 1?
