1. Why does Mike become self-aware?

Mike is under worked controlling cargo flights to Terra, so additional circuitry is added so that he can also control payroll, robot traffic, and communication and environmental systems. When the extra hardware is added, Mike has more neuristors than the human brain has neurons, and he "wakes up."

2. Describe Davis' family.

Davis' grandfathers were shipped to Luna for violent crimes they committed on Terra. One of Davis' grandmothers was part of the Stone Gang clan marriage and had six husbands; the other volunteered to go to Luna rather than be "re-educated." The rest of Davis' family tree includes witches, pirates, and deportees.

3. Why is Davis the first human Mike talks to?

Mike knows English, so he can translate, but he doesn't bother talking to humans. Aside from Davis, Mike feels that all the humans with whom he is acquainted are "stupid."
