The novel opens up in what appears to be a quaint section of Paris. A young woman enters a bakery where she is admired by the baker. She walks happily to the flat that she is staying in for the summer with her boyfriend. The objective is to trace the setting of the novel and analyze how that will affect the novel as a whole.

1. Class Discussion: In the opening of the novel, where are the characters? Is this a permanent home for them? Why are they there? Where do they come from? Why is the setting in Paris? What kind of a city is Paris? How might part of the plot be about romance?
