Objective

In Chapter 1, Mr. Poe drops the children off in Paltryville and leaves them alone.

The objective of this lesson is to examine the reasons Mr. Poe left the children and what he might have done instead. Also, we'll examine the topic of abandonment in life in general.

Class Discussion 1:

What type of person is Mr. Poe and how does that influence his actions, in chapter 1? In other words, what is his personality like?

Class Discussion 2:

If Mr. Poe had to leave the children in Paltryville and knew so ahead of time, what should he have done to better assist or prepare the children?

Class Activity:

Ask each student to write an in-class essay of at least 500 words on the topic of abandonment. The children can use any of the following as possible themes or choose one of their own:
