Anjum
This character is one of the novel’s two major female characters. She was born Aftab, the name that her parents gave her when they believed that she was born a boy. She was later revealed as having genitals with aspects of both sexes, making her a hermaphrodite or “hijra.” She has chosen to live her life as a female.
S. Tilottama
This character is one of two main female characters in the novel. Her origins are mysterious, though it is suspected she is from Kerala. Her subsequent involvement with the Kashmiri separatist movement led to her torture.
