Chapter 1: January 1895
• Henry has a disturbing dream that he is wandering in an Italian city and comes across his deceased mother and his Aunt Kate in a crowded plaza and they want something from him.
• Henry is visited by an old friend, an expatriate Russian princess, who mentions Paul Joukowsky, a lost love of Henry's. Henry sits down to write a story about his love for Paul and what happened in the past.
• Henry has great hopes for the premiere of his play, GUY DOMVILLE but it turns out to be a dismal failure and Oscar Wilde's play, AN IDEAL HUSBAND, which Henry attends the night of his own premiere, is a big success.

Chapter 2: February 1895
• After the failure of his play in London, Henry goes to Ireland to visit first with Lord Houghton for one week at Castle Dublin where he becomes exhausted by the six balls...
