Objective

Setting. The Master Puppeteer is set in Feudal Japan during the Tokugawa shogunate. This was a time when the Tokugawa family was in power as shoguns.

The objective of this lesson is to look at setting.

Lesson

1. Homework. Students will research Japan during the Tokugawa shogunate, writing a short paper on the physical, cultural, governmental and economical aspects of the setting.

2. Class discussion. Could this novel had been set anywhere? Would most of the situations in The Master Puppeteer have applied Europe in this era? How did the author make this setting unique? How did the setting affect the characters? The plot? The themes? Why is the setting important?

3. Group work. In groups students will research Japan in the present time and discuss the similarities and differences between the present and the Tokugawa shogunate listing the most importance differences and similarities to present to the class...
