Objective
This lesson introduces students to the nonfiction book The Man in the Red Coat by Julian Barnes. Students will research the setting and time period of the Belle Époque and will explore the book’s narrative style in the first few pages. The Man in the Red Coat is a biographical book that explores the Belle Époque period of French history (1870-1914) through three primary figures: Dr. Samuel Pozzi, Count Robert de Montesquiou-Fezensac, and Prince Edmond de Polignac.

Research Activity: Take time in class to conduct research on the Belle Époque era of France in the late nineteenth century. What does the name mean? What is the era known for? What artists and authors arose to prominence in this era?
Group Assignment: Assign students to groups of 3-4 each to share their research and develop a presentation that looks at the culture, art, writing, philosophies...
