Objective
The objective of this lesson is to examine Mariana's grief, and why she cannot relinquish Sebastian. It has been nearly 14 months since Sebastian died. Marian still struggles with grief and wants to hide from the world.

Class Discussion: In Chapter 1, how is Mariana struggling to sort through Sebastian's belongings? How is grief interfering with what she knows has to be done? Why does she think parting with some of his things (like his green trainers) will cause her self-harm? Why does she weep over the shoes? How does holding on to his things keep him alive in some way and help her not to lose him entirely? How long has it been since he died? How does Mariana want to deal with her grief by hiding from the world? Why is the fact that she still loves him interfering with her ability to move on...
