· The novel is told from the third-person point of view except for chapters that are written by a journal writer who remains anonymous until the end of the novel.
· In the Prologue, Mariana is sure that Edward Fosca is a murderer.
· She cannot prove it, and she may never be able to prove it.
· He has gotten away with killing at least two people and he thinks he has won.
· Mariana is determined to outsmart him and catch him.
· The Prologue takes place on the Cambridge campus after Mariana has been there for a few days.
· The chapters that follow the Prologue take place before Mariana’s decision to outsmart Edward Fosca.
· The chapter abstracts use the present tense and provide a linear summary.
