Lesson 1 (from Part I (Pages 1 - 60))
Objective
The objective of this lesson is for students to analyze Giovanna's relationship with her father in Part I of the book. When Giovanna overhears her father, Andrea, telling her mother, Nella, that he is fearful Giovanna is getting a face like his estranged sister Vittoria, Giovanna is devastated because she understands her father thinks Vittoria is ugly. Giovanna is at an awkward stage of a young girl's life, in her very early teens, she adores her father, and she is insecure in her own skin. Andrea's comments send Giovanna into a tailspin of self-doubt and worry and they hone her determination to meet her Aunt Vittoria for herself for the first time.
