Objective
Chapter 1
The events of Chapter 1 immediately set a serious and somber tone for the novel. The objective of this lesson is to facilitate a class discussion around a very sensitive topic about the major event of the first chapter: a child's rape and murder.
Lesson
1) Writing Activity: Begin class with a focusing exercise. Have students write for five minutes in response to the following prompt: "What is your reaction as a reader to what happens to Susie in Chapter 1? How does what happened make you think the rest of the novel will be like?" Collect their responses.
