Objective
Students will explore the setting of "The Love of a Good Woman."
"The Love of a Good Woman" takes place in the middle of the previous century, in a small Canadian farming town. This setting is unlikely to immediately engage students and may be unfamiliar enough to alienate them from the characters' concerns. This lesson is intended to engage students with this setting and give them enough background information to allow them to empathize with the story's characters.
Lesson
Presentation: Prepare a brief presentation for students using images from rural Canada in the 1940's and early 1950's.
Class Discussion: What do you imagine that life was like for people in rural Canada at this time? What would most people have done for a living? What would the expectations for men be? What would the expectations for women have been? What would children's lives have been like...
