· Chapter 1 begins on page 6.

· The story opens with Leda who begins feeling sick while driving.

· Leda has barely the strength to hold the steering wheel and begins to feel like she is on an empty beach in the middle of the day, a red flag waving in the distance.

· Leda recalls her mother telling her never to swim when she sees a red flag because this indicates danger.

· In the present, Leda sees herself dipping her toe in the water despite the warning.

· She wakes in the hospital.

· The doctors tell Leda she had crashed into a guardrail.

· Luckily, she was fine except for an injury to her left side, “an inexplicable lesion” (6).

· Leda’s friends and daughters come to see her.
