Small Towns

The focus of "Lost Continent" is small-town America, where Bryson identifies as his roots. In the first chapters of the book, Bryson discusses his home of Des Moines and small-towns he has encountered on his travels. In this lesson, discuss Bryson's relationship with small-town America.

Lesson

1) Data Collection: Ask the class to list adjectives or key phrases that Bryson uses when discussing small-towns.

2) Groups: Split the class into several small groups. Ask each to try to develop a claim of "What is Bryson's relationship with small-towns?" Ask the groups to present.

3) Class Discussion: Ask the groups to debate their findings and opinions of Bryson's views and relationship. Is his relationship clear-cut positive or negative?
