Lesson 1 (from Part I (Chapters 1 - 12))
Objective
The objective of this lesson is for students to explore the author’s background and other works. Students should research the author's biography and be able to explain what aspects of her personal experiences contributed to her choice of subject matter and approach in writing The Lions of Little Rock.
Lesson
Class Discussion: Who is the author of The Lions of Little Rock? Where did she grow up? What kind of work did her parents do? What did she study in college? What other kinds of work has she written, and how was the subject matter of that work similar to or different from that of The Lions of Little Rock?
Small Group Activity: Divide students into small groups and ask them to create lists of facts about the author’s life. These can include her early life, where she grew up, her educational background, publications...
