• The novel is written in the first person, past-tense and is narrated by Marlee Nisbett.
• The terms "Negro" and "colored" are used throughout this lesson plan to describe character of African American descent in reflection of the vocabulary used by the author in this book.
• Chapter 1 begins in the summer of 1958, when Marlee was at the public pool in her hometown of Little Rock, Arkansas, with her friend Sally McDaniels and her older sister Judy.
• Marlee was afraid of heights but had been pressured to go to the high diving board and was afraid to jump off.
• Sally laughed at Marlee as the other kids taunted her.
• Marlee's older sister Judy, seeing that Marlee was paralyzed with fear, climbed up the diving board to help...
