Lesson 1 (from Section 1: "Morning")
Objective
Students will become familiar with Yoruba cultural background necessary to an informed reading of "The Lion and the Jewel."
For most students, Yoruba cultural history, particularly as it applies to mid-twentieth-century Nigeria, will be very unfamiliar. The play The Lion and the Jewel hinges on an understanding of how traditional Yoruba culture was being eroded at this time, however. This lesson offers students the background information that will make this central issue clear and relatable.
Lesson
Small Group Research: Divide class into groups of three. Ask that each group member research one of the following three topics:
• widow inheritance in Nigeria
• polygamy in Nigeria
• bride-price in Nigeria
When they have finished, they should share their findings with their group members.
Reading: Distribute copies of "Yoruba Religion and Myth" by Hal Horton (available online).
