Section 1: "Morning"

• The play opens with stage directions. The setting is described as "A clearing on the edge of the market, dominated by an immense 'odan' tree" (1).
• This is the heart of the village of Ilujinle, and as the play begins the local school children can be heard chanting the times tables through the open window of the school, "on the right."
• Sidi, the village beauty, enters opposite the school. She is carrying a pail of water on her head.
• At Sidi's appearance, the schoolmaster, Lakunle, appears at the window briefly, then leaves his classroom to speak with Sidi outside.
• Lakunle is a young man dressed in an odd compilation of ill-fitting English styles.
