Objective
The objective of this lesson is for students to analyze the historical foundations of the border between the United States and Mexico. In Part I of The Line Becomes a River, Cantu summarizes the history of the creation of the border between the two countries, beginning with the 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. Cantu discusses changes to the border over the years, and the cultural and political influences driving them. Understanding how the border was formed and the factors affecting its evolution will provide students with a necessary background for a deeper understanding of the other issues in the book.
