Lesson 1 (from Part One: Three-Year Anniversary)
Objective
The Leftovers, by Tom Perrotta, examines the fallout after a “Sudden Departure” of millions of people on earth. The episodic narrative transitions between the stories of the four members of the Garvey family: Kevin, Laurie, Jill, and Tom. In the Prologue, the author establishes the setting of the novel and introduces the character of Laurie Garvey and the organization known as the “GR.” Objectives for this lesson include researching Biblical interpretations of the Rapture, examining the setting of the Prologue, identifying the novel’s narrative style, and analyzing the character of Laurie Garvey in The Leftovers.

Group Assignment: Assign students to small groups of 3-4 each. As a group, read the Prologue of The Leftovers and discuss the setting of the novel. What clues in the opening indicate the time period in which the story is set? Where does Laurie Garvey live? What event occurred...
