Allan Quatermain buys a bottle of Laudanum and takes considerable dose after he tires of watching Mina. The objective of this lesson is to understand the historical use of opiates.

Lesson

1) Initiate a class discussion on Quatermain's use of opium, and opiates. What are problems with prolonged opiate use?

2) Have each student explain in short essay form Quatermain's use of opiates. What was an opium den? What was Laudanum?

3) Break the class into groups of two or three and have them discuss opiate addiction. What kinds of affects are visible when a person is addicted to opiates? What kinds of side affects will inhibit Quatermain's continued service?

4) In essay form, explain how the government classifies opiates. What kinds of drugs are still allowed with a prescription? Why are these drugs so tightly regulated? What were they used for in the past? When was opiate use most...
