This scene is the perfect first scene as it sets the stage for the rest of the book. The objective of this lesson will be to explore some of the possible foreshadowing that happens in this scene, and to discuss some of the possible outcomes.

Lesson

1) Prediction: Read aloud with the class the part where Charlie says the last thing he can remember of his normal life is Beth. Have the students each write a short prediction about what this memory could be foreshadowing. How will this be important to the plot? Do you think it gives away too much? Why or why not? What evidence is there in the scene to support your belief? Allow some volunteers to read their ideas.
