Objective

The objective of this lesson is to examine Sai's socioeconomic status, and what is revealed about status and class in Mangkon. Sai lives in the very poorest area of An Lung. Because of her socioeconomic status, she has little chance of having a better life.

Lesson

Class Discussion: Where does Sai live? What type of family does she come from? Would she be considered to be poverty-stricken? Are the people who live in the Fens poor? Why are her options for an education or a good job limited? What opportunities do the people of Mangkonhave if they are wealthy or come from a good family? Why does it take luck for Sai to overcome her background and get a better life? What is revealed about status and class in Mangkon?

Activity: Divide the students into small groups. Have each group analyze the impact of Soontornvat's choices...
