· In Chapter 1, Petra’s paternal grandmother, Lita, tosses another log onto the fire as she and Petra look up at the night sky.

· Lita says since she will not see Petra on her 13th birthday, she has a present for her.

· She hands Petra a silver pendant in the shape of a sun.

· The center is filled with a flat black stone.

· Lita tells Petra that if she holds the pendant up to the sun, the light will glow through the obsidian.

· Lita has an identical pendant.

· She tells Petra that the Yucatecos believe obsidian holds magic and is “a doorway to bring lost ones together” (2).

· Petra says she does not want to leave Earth with her parents.

· Lita is too old to go...
