Lesson 1 (from Introduction and Author’s Note)

Objective

The Laramie Project is a play by Moisés Kaufman and members of the Tectonic Theater Project. Research for the internationally successful play began one month after the brutal beating and subsequent death of Matthew Shepard in the city of Laramie, Wyoming. Kaufman's objective was to explore how this crime defined the culture, not just of Laramie, but of the entire United States. In this lesson, students are introduced to the play and will research and discuss Moisés Kaufman and the Tectonic Theater Project.

Lesson

Teacher Introduction: Introduce the students to the play and playwright. The Laramie Project is a collaborative production developed by Moisés Kaufman and members of the Tectonic Theater Project in 1998, relating to the torture and murder of gay university student Matthew Shepard. The play was developed to open a dialogue in America regarding prejudice.
