During the reign of Edward III, England was peaceful and prosperous. The warlike among his subjects were kept busy in his foreign wars. His government established at home an atmosphere of plenty, tranquility, and security. England's inhabitants enjoyed prosperity and safety.

2. In Chapter 1, what is the situation at Lynwood?

Lynwood village is in a fertile valley in Somersetshire. A large ancient keep rises from the valley. The defenses of the keep are kept up because of the owner's rank, not because they are required for protection. The moat is clear of weeds and full of water and the drawbridge is well covered, but overgrown at the edges with grass even though huge chains connect it to the gateway. The gate seems to be permanently fixed on the ground. The spikes of the portcullis seem threatening, but ivy trails up them. The archway is open during the day, but it is only guarded by large doors that open to a push at night.
