Objective
The Lady in the Lake is a hard-boiled detective thriller by Raymond Chandler, famed for his work in this genre and his iconic detective Phillip Marlowe. The objective of this lesson is to introduce and examine the hard-boiled detective genre.
Lesson
1) Have students bring in examples of detective stories or movies and pictures or photos they associate with detective stories. At the beginning of class, have students show and explain their examples of detective stories. Discuss the characteristics of the different examples of detective stories. With the class, try to categorize the detective genres the students brought examples of. Which ones are similar to The Lady in the Lake? How?
2) Ask the class to identify as many of the elements of a hard-boiled detective thriller in The Lady of the Lake as possible. What does it mean to be part of this genre? What similarities does...
