This main character in the novel is a slave on a plantation in Santo Domingo when he is first introduced. He is in charge of the horses and is an expert on judging horses. Through the course of his life he sees many political changes, but they continually result in enslavement and suffering.
Macandal
This character is a slave on a plantation in Santo Domingo when he is first introduced. He is a Mandigue, and the slaves from that part of Africa are reputed to be troublemakers. Early in the novel, this character’s arm is caught in a machine and must be amputated with a machete, leading him to become a cowherd.
