Lesson 1 (from Chapters One through Six)

Objective

The aim of this lesson is to introduce the character of Lou Fields.

Lesson

1. With the students, decide what they think Lou's goal is in the novel. Divide the students into pairs and ask them to design a diagram that shows the different stages that Lou will have to complete to work towards his goal and how he can get back on track when he makes a mistake.

2. Divide the students into two groups. One group should research Lou's life and the other group should think of questions they like to ask Lou about his life. Finish the lesson with a question and answer session.

3. Ask the students to develop a scenario that puts Lou into trouble and swap their scenario with someone else. The aim is then to think how Lou's character would escape from that scenario.

4. Homework. Write Lou's character background.
