Objective
The objective of this lesson is for students to explore the author’s background and personal interest in the subject matter reflected in the novel. Students will discuss and research information like where the author is from, how old the author was at the time of publication, and what other books or stories she has published. Students will consider how this information might impact their reading.

Class Discussion: Who is the author of The Joys of Motherhood? Where is she from? What year was the novel published? How old was the author at the time? How was this work received by the public? What other works has the author written? How might the author’s background influence your reading of the book?
Small Group Activity: Divide students into small groups and ask students to compile a list of facts about the author, encouraging them to...
