Lesson 1 (from Prologue: Island to Part One: How to Bury a Tree)
Objective
The objective of this lesson is to discuss the point of view of Part One of The Island of Missing Trees, and how Shafak's choice of viewpoint affects the story. Shafak uses the first-person point of view in the Prologue and the sections titled, "Fig Tree." In the other chapters, Shafak changes to a third-person limited point of view.

Class Discussion: When is the narrator of the Prologue identified? Is everything that happens in that section and in the "Fig Tree" chapters told from the narrator's point of view? Does anyone else tell the story in these sections? What does the narrator reveal about itself and other characters? How does the point of view change in the other chapters? Who does the narrator follow in "A Girl Named Island" and other named chapters? What is known about Ana from these chapters? Is the third-person narrator...
