Objective
The objective of this lesson is for students to explore the authors’ background and personal interest in the subject matter reflected in the novel. Students will analyze facts about the authors. Students will discuss how these facts may have influenced the work as well as their own reading of the work.
Lesson
Class Discussion: Who are the authors of The Island? When and where were they born? How was the play received by the public? Did it win any awards? Has the author written any other plays? How might the authors’ background influence your reading of the book?
Small Group Activity: Divide students into small groups and ask students to compile a list of facts about John Kani, Winston Ntshona, and Athol Fugard, encouraging them to include information that impacts the novel’s themes and characters. Regroup and ask students to share their facts. Write a...
