Lesson 1 (from Down: Part One)
Objective
The objective of this lesson is to explore the background of Colson Whitehead, the author of The Intuitionist. The Intuitionist, published in 1999, is Whitehead's first novel. It made an immediate impression and won a number of prestigious literary honors. Whitehead has gone on to write additional novels that have been equally acclaimed. His writing explores themes of racism, frequently in dystopian, futuristic, or otherwise not-quite-worldly settings.

What other novels has he written? What awards and honors has he received? What themes and issues seem to interest him?
