Lesson 1 (from Part I (Chapters 1 - 18, pages 1 - 76))
Objective
The objective of this Daily Lesson is for students to analyze Barnes's establishment and development of Avery's character in Part I. In Part I, the reader meets Avery, a 17-year-old girl in Connecticut whose mother has recently died and whose father is estranged. Avery lives with her half-sister Libby, though she sometimes sleeps in her car if Libby's on-again, off-again boyfriend Drake is around. Avery is whip-smart, hard-working, and kind, running poker games in the park to help pay bills, waitressing part-time, acing impossible physics tests, and buying breakfast for her homeless friend and sometime-Chess partner, Harry.
