Lesson 1 (from Chapters 1-6)

Objective

The objective of this lesson is for students to comment on the narrative structure and style of the novel. Two of the characters speak in the first person, and one in the third. This allows the reader a different level of engagement with the three characters.

Lesson

Class Discussion: What is the temporal setting of the novel? What verb tenses are used by the three characters, Will, Phoebe, and John Leal? How does each character speak of his or her past? How does this narration contribute to the mood of the novel thus far?

Small Group Activity: Divide students into small groups and ask students to find three different verb tenses used in the novel. Ask students to take a sheet of paper and divide it into three columns: past, present, and future. Reviewing the first six chapters, ask the students to populate the three columns...
