Cecilia
At the beginning of the novel, this character devotes every waking moment to being the perfect wife, mother, neighbor, businessperson, and friend. After finding a letter in her attic that is written in her husband's handwriting and directed to her with the direction to only read in the event of his death, this character's world is completely upended. By the end of the novel, this character had rededicated herself to her now-special needs daughter.
John-Paul
This character believes that he is responsible for murdering his girlfriend in their adolescence. Although this character is an excellent father and a good husband, though he is chronically disorganized and absentminded in his daily life, he spends most of his life swimming in guilt over the unintended murder and punishing himself for it in different ways. In the Epilogue, it is revealed that the death was not his fault.
