Lesson 1 (from Part I (Pages 3 - 64))

Objective

The objective of this lesson is for students to analyze Kanai's early relationship with his uncle, Nirmal. Kanai is sent to live temporarily with Nirmal and his Aunt Nilima in the impoverished Lusibari as an adolescent as a punishment for misbehavior in school. Later, as a students, Kanai bumps into Nirmal in a market and pays for a book Nirmal accidentally ruins and has no money to cover the cost of. Kanai is somewhat perplexed when, years after Nirmal's passing, Nilima contacts Kanai to tell him Nirmal has left Kanai his prized notebook of writings.
