Objective
Students will learn the conventions of a Gothic novel and use this to analyze Chapter One of the novel. Building this foundation will allow them to continue looking at the novel’s interpretations and use of the Gothic form as the story continues.

Class Activity: Introduce the conventions of the Gothic novel to the class. Gothic was first used to describe architecture in the seventeenth century, and later the term was used to define artwork set in the ruins of these buildings in the Gothic Revival of the eighteenth and nineteenth century. Jonh Bellair’s use of the Gothic novel is a modern interpretation of a much older tradition. Conventions in a Gothic novel are effects which are used to make the reader feel uneasy.
