Chapter One
- Lewis Barnavelt is on a train in the year 1948 to go live with his Uncle Jonathan in the town of New Zebedee after the death of his mother and father in a car crash.
- Lewis prays while on his way and wonders what his life will be life.
- When the train stops, Lewis struggles to pull down his trunk, and a man tells him not to kill himself.
- The man introduces himself as Uncle Jonathan.
- Uncle Jonathan begins introducing the town history to Lewis when a clock tolls and Uncle Jonathan freezes.
- When the bell stops ringing, Uncle Jonathan unfreezes and nervously says he was thinking about a stove he left on the kitchen counter.
- Uncle Jonathan and Lewis head along the town with Uncle Jonathan carrying Lewis’ suitcase.
