Lesson 1 (from Section 1: Chapters 1-3)
Objective
The objective of this Daily Lesson is to introduce students to the techniques and purposes of nonlinear narrative as preparation for encountering the narrative style of The House We Grew Up In. Jewell's story begins in 2010, skips ahead five months, then flashes back to 1981. Every few pages, the setting changes to another period in the lives of the Bird family, moving back in forth in time. This lesson offers students insight into how to understand the flow of a nonlinear story and asks them to think about what purposes an author might have in choosing this technique.
