• The House We Grew Up In is a non-linear narrative that shifts between the perspectives of various members of the Bird family over the course of 30 years, gradually unfolding the story of how the family members became estranged from one another through the use of frequent flashbacks and emails between the mother (Lorelei) and a friend.
• Content Warning: This narrative deals with a teenager's suicide and the lingering effects it has on his family. Hoarding disorder, a death from cancer, and family estrangement are also dealt with at length. A motif of incestuous feelings appears in several places in the text, although the only incestuous action that takes place is a non-consensual kiss from a son to a mother.
