· Following the novel’s compound epigraph, Esther Tull considers the snow and her current situation as she approaches a house.
· Esther notes the lack of joy in her circumstances as she rings at the door, waiting for admission from Carew.
· Carew admits Esther with details about where the master of the house, Lord Strythe, is on the evening she visits and derides her with her lack of information about the décor in place at the residence.
· Carew conducts Esther to a workroom, progress towards which is described along with the surroundings.
· Arriving at the workroom that is their destination, Carew chatters away and Esther desires to get to work.
· Carew searches out Esther’s sewing kit...
