Lesson 1 (from Chapters 1-4)
Objective
The objective of this lesson is to establish a historical context for the novel by looking at the histories of Nathaniel Hawthorne, the town of Salem, Massachusetts, and the House of the Seven Gables itself. Hawthorne’s novel takes place in an actual location--one that Hawthorne is intimately familiar with. Several of the novel’s themes spring from the history of the novel’s real-world setting, as well as Hawthorne’s own family history.
