Objective
Students will examine the world-building in Chapter One of The House in the Cerulean Sea.
An important part of reading fantasy is understanding the ground rules of the fantasy world inside the narrative. In The House in the Cerulean Sea, tension is built in the conflict between DICOMY and the magical world it regulates. This lesson asks students to read the first chapter, describe the world being established, and then speculate about how this world-building foreshadows the book's central conflict.

Reading Activity: Give students time to read pages 9-16 of The House in the Cerulean Sea.
Partner Activity: Divide the class into pairs. Ask the partners to write a description of the world that is established in the first chapter: who lives in this world, who seems to have the power, and what are they doing with their power?
