Lesson 1

Objective

The fictional character of Dracula is based on a historical figure, known as Vlad the Impaler. The characters in The Historian do research on both the fictional character (Bram Stoker’s Dracula), as well as the historical figure. In order to fully understand The Historian, it is important for readers to have a basic understanding of Dracula. The objective of this lesson is to learn about Dracula in preparation for reading The Historian.

Lesson

Class Discussion: Who is Dracula? Describe the character Bram Stoker created. Was (or is) Dracula real? How do you know? Who was Vlad the Impaler? Why is Dracula important to the story?

Activity: Divide the students into groups of three or four. Have each group address the following: Create a character biography for Dracula based on what is commonly known about him. When they have finished, discuss their biographies as a class...
