Epigraph and Prologue

• This novel begins with the Epigraph, which consists of an excerpt from "Journey Home" by Rabindranath Tagore and a Hindu Proverb.
• The excerpt by Tagore tells of the trials one must undergo to finally arrive at the “innermost shrine” (9).
• The Hindu Proverb reminds readers to make sure to be present when the Goddess of Wealth arrives to bestow her blessing.
• The next section is called Characters Who Appear, which lists both the names and short descriptions of the characters in the novel, as well as a few Hindi words and their interpretations.
• The Prologue begins in Ajar, India in September 1955.
• The narrator describes a girl as she carries an earthenware jug, called a mutki, which contains everything she owns.
