Chapter 1 introduces Aibileen and the Leefolt family. The objective of this lesson will focus on character and foreshadowing.

Lesson

1) Class Discussion: The first chapter of this novel is written in the first person point of view of Aibileen. Discuss Aibileen's character with the class, her job, her relationships, and her recent loss. Discuss how Aibileen is treated by the family with whom she works and Aibileen's relationship with Mae Mobley. Aibileen attends to her employer and her friends during a bridge game. Discuss the conversation taking place during this party and how it reflects on the setting of the novel. Discuss how these discussions foreshadow some of the events that will transpire later in the novel.
